Alice Maud Mary Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was born 25 April 1843, the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria. She married Prince Louis of Hesse on 1 July 1862, while the English court was heavily in mourning for the death of her father, Albert. The ceremony at Osborne House was described by the Queen as "more of a funeral than a wedding".

She died of diphtheria at Darmstadt in Hesse on 14 December 1878. She was the maternal great-grandmother of the present Duke of Edinburgh.
